my sisters cat needs surgery are there any resourses to help lower the cost?
May 23rd, 2010 | by admin |The vet said it would cost about $8,000 at least for her cat to get surgery and treatment. Do you know if there is any kind of pet insurance, or other kind of resourses she can check into? thanks so much
He has a tumor, and the total cost with MRI., 16 treatments of kemo, surgery, blood, ect…is between 8-9k they told her today. I feel bad because she loves her cat..I apprecaite all your help
she is checking care credit loan too, thanks. Is it possible they may be adding unnessary fees, we are in Va? thanks again for helping!
I found out why its so costly..Her cat needs to see a certified Surgeon because the location of the tumor is near his neck. The regular vet cant do it. The kemo of 16 treatments alone is $5,000. Thanks for all your help!
It’s too late for pet insurance since the cat is already diagnosed. Get a second opinion from another vet and check with them on their costs. Also ask your vet if they will consider a payment plan.
Not many surgeries cost $8,000 in cats. What is the cat’s prognosis in the long-term? If the cat’s likelihood of survival is low, you may want to consider euthanasia as it sounds like the problem is serious and the cat will need a lot of veterinary supportive care – and may not have good quality of life afterward. If the chances for a normal healthy life are low, I would have to weigh my options.

Euthenasia.
Then adopt a healthy one from the Humane Society. If an animal is that sick, put it out of it’s misery. Please.

Holy carp. First get online and go to http://www.peta.com or it might be http://www.peta.org.
They offer very low cost spaying, neutering, shots, all kinds of things. If they can’t do the surgery, they will have a contact of someone who can help!
As far as insurance? Forget it. If you don’t believe me, call any vet in the book and say "Do you take insurance? If so, what kind?" If they do, it’s THEIR insurance. Not like Blue Cross. You know?
Lastly, I can’t think of a thing that would cost 8k for a cat. Did she take the cat to some horrible place like Banfield???? They are the WORST possible place to take ANY pet. They make up costs, make up sicknesses, overcharge for every single thing from a shot to a pain med to stitches to the seven thousand xrays they will insist you need or the five hundred fecals. Stay away from them!!!!!

I hate to tell you this, but I think you need to get a 2nd opinion. Most vets won’t do such extensive cancer therapy because it generally doesn’t work and the animal suffers without understanding what’s going on. Do what’s best for the cat to ease it’s suffering, but don’t prolong it.

"Seattle" posted an excellent list of organizations that can help with vet bills a few days ago.
You can find it going back through the questions in this category to the question "I can’t afford my vet bills — any ideas or clinics?" posted by "divinemadness" and checking out "Seattle’s" answer.
