Think like an owner…..know the business/industry you are in.
Ability to see the big picture.
Have a "futures" orientation.
I would recommend you read about the field. Try the SHRM website (Society for Human Resource Management) and also www.workforceonline.com.
Most HR managers start working in a particular field of HR–recruitment, benefits, compensation, HRIS, organization development — and then broaden their knowledge base to other areas because they are all interconnected.

Check out the Society for Human Resource Management at http://www.shrm.org/
As to what else you can be? Talk to the career counselor at your high school. He/she should have helpful information.
If not, go to the library or get online and start to look at what jobs other people have. look for something challenging & exciting!@

One of the biggest qualities an HR person needs to have is an ability to listen, and the ability to see the big picture. Those two skills are incredibly important to any company’s ability to succeed long term.
As for not knowing what else you can be, there are tons of professions out there, and don’t sell yourself short now. Take some self-assessment tests and speak to your friends and family who do have jobs and see what they "really do" not what you think they do. You’ll be amazed how much of a difference that makes.
Good luck.
